IIM SIRMAUR ORGANIZED A DAY-LONG NATIONAL SEMINAR ON THE OCCASION OF SUSTAINABILITY DAY 

Centre for Sustainability and Environmental Management (CSEM), IIM Sirmaur conducted an online day-long seminar titled ‘Act Responsible, Think Sustainable’ under the able guidance of Professor Neelu Rohmetra, Director IIM Sirmaur. The conveners of the seminar were Dr. Arpita Ghosh and Dr. Parul Malik. The seminar was conducted in two sessions on themes across Water and Air Pollution & Solid Waste Management. The invited speakers for the seminar included Prof. Mathava Kumar, Prof. Shiva Prasad, Prof. Sumedha Chakma, Prof. Brajesh Kumar Dubey, Prof. Anurag Garg, Ms. Sonia Garga, and Mr. Jayant Joshi.  Dr. Arpita Ghosh delivered the welcome address and informed that around 100 participants around the country registered for the event. She also mentioned about the UBA villages adopted by the institute for community engagement and outreach for social and economic welfare. Director, IIM Sirmaur Professor Neelu Rohmetra addressed the gathering in the inaugural session and announced the visionary plans for IIM Sirmaur in the field of sustainability and environmental management on the occasion of Sustainability day in the coming years. She stressed on creating balance between development and sustainability and adoption of better ways to nurture earth in a sustainable manner. She highlighted that the human-irresponsible behaviour towards environment is resulting into various disasters. The first speaker was Prof. Mathava Kumar, IIT Madras who shed light on sources of water pollution, water quality parameters and the common and emerging pollutants affecting water bodies. He also apprised about the advanced waste water treatment technologies and criteria for choosing the suitable sustainable technology. The subsequent speaker Prof. Shiva Prasad, G. B. Pant Agricultural University drew attention towards protection of natural springs and streams in Indian Himalayan region on an urgency basis for long term sustainable availability of fresh water. Ms. Sonia Garga, Director - Strategic Partnership & Programs, Saahas spoke about the Waste management in India and shed light upon drawbacks of burning waste in Indian context. Prof. Anurag Garg, IIT Bombay talked about Solid waste management, reuse and recycling options and challenges from a global and Indian perspective. Prof. Sumedha Chakma, IIT Delhi spoke about new approaches for the enhancement of landfill capacity derived from experimental and mathematical modelling and low cost bio-engineered reactive barriers. Mr. Jayant Joshi, Group General Manager, EIL Pvt. Ltd. spoke about produced water treatment options and technologies available for the oil and gas exploration industry. Prof. Brajesh Kumar Dubey, IIT Kharagpur talked about resource recovery and circular economy, life cycle analysis and holistic approaches for waste management.
